Continuing the iPad painted portraits. This is from a contest I ran on my facebook page in which I offered a free iPad portrait of your dog. I received many entries and had a difficult time choosing which one should win, so I am creating several portraits. Gracey is the first winner from the contest, and isn't she just a winner anyway? Lovely girl.

IPad paintings give me the flexibility to create different backgrounds for a subject, while the subject remains the same in each portrait. This is Wolf in a variety of settings, which I created using the Brushes application on the iPad.

This is an iPad painting of Luna, my latest subject. In the words of one of the people she owns:"She is a Cherrier - A Chihuahua/Jack Russel Terrier. We found her posted on PetFinder.com and we adopted her from Homeward Pet the same day we found her. She was 9 weeks old. She has two bunny brothers, whom she loves to play with and watch over. Her favorite best day ever is chewing sticks and chasing squirrels. She promises to finish her dinner if she can have a treat first and she always keeps her promise."
Theo as an iPad painting in preparation for a painted portrait- Seattle, WA
The old man sits before his charge, the park at North Acres., the desired setting for Theo in this painting. He is "surveying all that he believes is his" for this portrait, as is customary for him. I love this dog. I hate the idea of him leaving us. So many friends will miss him.

Back to dogs for a moment. I had an appointment yesterday with Theo, the "Sheriff" of North Acres Off Leash Dog Park in Seattle. I was commissioned to paint Theo by friends of Theo and as a gift to Pam. The two together have been stewards of the park for years. Friends of both are sadly looking at saying goodbye to Theo in the near future, as he is advancing in age and his body is succumbing to cancer. It was very moving to meet Theo, and brought tears to my eyes to think that this dignified, beautiful dog may be leaving us soon. These are some sketches and a photo of Theo from the appointment.
Painted portrait of Won du Paye, 1986- Seattle, WA
Back to the portraits I painted at the Fremont Studio over the Red Door Tavern in the late 80's. This is Won du Paye, who would say, " you pronounce my name 'One Day', as in, "One Day I will achieve my dreams". He was my African Dance teacher- lithe, handsome, and very cheerful, but had sadness in his eyes too. He sat very patiently for me.

I'm scanning and cataloging more portraits from the early days in the Fremont studio over the Red Door Tavern. Back then the Fremont area of Seattle was definitely not shishi. It was vintage clothing stores and Espresso to Go, a take-out pizza joint and Cape Cod Comfy Chairs- and there was always parking. I used to walk to the studio from my rental room on Baker Ave from which I could see the Ship Canal and the Olympic Mountains, and for that one didn't pay extra. I anguished over whether I could possibly be a painter. This is a portrait of Tami, girlfriend of a friend, who sat for me so I could try my hand at some painted portraits.

I've been scanning and cataloging some of my older work- a type of spring cleaning I suppose. This painting of the artist Jacob Lawrence is from 1986 when I attended a presentation he and Gwen Lawrence gave at the Seattle Art Museum. I sketched him as he talked and went back to my old studio in Fremont to complete the painting. Both artists have long passed, but their works live on, and so does Jacob on the wall in my hallway.
Dog Love of my Life, Shake Sugaree- Seattle, WA
Back in Seattle now, working on long-needed cleaning out of closets and drawers. It's spring. Found this old photo which has been missing for years, in the back of a closet. The photo is of my beloved Shake Sugaree, taken by girlfriend at the time, about 20 years ago. Shakey was the dog love of my life- a Bassett mix, ball obsessed, swimmer and leaper, talker, garbage hound, sweetheart of a dog and smarter than me. I still miss her. I could hear her breathing in my room on her bed for months after she passed.The photo is of Shakey in her later years, and the numbers are from one time after I walked her (off leash of course in those days, and she would run all through the woods), in the arboretum. She came back to my truck and hurled the numbers on the floor. It was so odd that she ate some plastic numbers, from god knows where. My girlfriend took the numbers from the garbage and made the photo- "Some Lucky Dog" referring to the Washington State Lottery promos saying "some lucky dog is going to win the lottery!". We used to try her numbers on lotto tickets, but never won. The way I won is that I got to share life with my beloved Shake Sugaree, all the way to the end.
iPad painting- Monument Valley
Another stop on the road trip with my Dad was Monument Valley. We did the driving tour and caught the golden sunlight of late afternoon on the incredible rock structures. I did an iPad painting of this famous scene, familiar from so many westerns.

On to the Grand Canyon. Sun wasn't shining on the canyon today until the last few minutes before sunset, when it flashed on some of the distant cliffs briefly.Today's iPad painting.

Continuing road trip w my Dad in the southwest. This is the view from the deck of our room at our hotel in Sedona- which feels like the bleeding, pulsating, heart of all creation.iPad painting I did as we watched the sun set.
iPad painting- Mojave Desert
Traveling with my Dad from southern CA to Colorado, taking our time visiting various places dear to us. Crossed the Mojave desert yesterday- a forbidding and seemingly lifeless expanse. The mountains have no vegetation at all, only patches of tumbleweed and sagebrush in the lower portions. It is ruggedly beautiful. Time for another iPad painting!

Not to be outdone by my post of Bernese Mountain Dog, Bella, with her painting on Jan. 28, a client from 10 years ago sent me this recent photo of Little Daisy sitting with her portrait. Little Daisy is not the youthful figure she once was. . . AW! yes she is! Still a puppy at heart!
